Great Yarmouth Town Reserves v Waveney Town Reserves.
Tuesday 8th March 2022.  Report by Martin Baxter.

On a cold and clear early March evening Yarmouth reserves entertained Waveney Town reserves with both sides still looking at an outside chance of pushing up into the 3 promotion spots available, with Waveney sitting in 6th position and Yarmouth in 8th with games in hand on those above them.
Before the game I had a quick chat with the Yarmouth coaches who told me that Waveney were fielding 5-6 of their first team players and this would now make it a really big ask for our young squad to compete with them.

The game started and on 5 minutes Yarmouth winger Gomez-Lopez went on a great solo run cutting through the visitors defence and with only the keeper to beat he put his effort just wide of the right hand post.

10 minutes later Louis Duffield also found himself clear through on goal but his strike is this time well saved by the Waveney keeper.
The action then switched to the other end of the pitch as the Waveney number 9 almost put his side 1-0 up with a close range volley that went just wide.
Yarmouth at this point are still matching their opponents blow for blow and they win a succession of corners, but are unable to create another clear cut chance from any of them.

On 23 minutes Waveney are awarded a free kick on the half-way line and the ball is sent over the top and into the box where the Yarmouth keeper Clements failed to come off of his line to claim it and this allowed Waveney’s Sam Clay to get to the ball first and slot home to put his side 1-0 up.
This goal seemed to lift the visitors and they started to take control of the midfield and on 40 minutes they doubled their advantage with a close range header from a corner which was converted by Tom Baldwin.
Half time:  Great Yarmouth Reserves 0  Waveney Town Reserves  2.
The 2nd half started slowly with neither side creating anything of note , however Waveney were now in control and the Bloaters were unable to put their opponents under any real pressure and the visitors looked the team most likely to score the next goal.

This eventually came on the hour mark with the Waveney number 9 scoring from close range after a deflection put the ball into his path.
10 minutes later they added a 4th with another deflected effort that wrong footed keeper Clements.
However Clements then made up for his first half error in the 80th minute with a superb point blank save to prevent the visitors scoring a 5th.
In injury time Duffield was brought down in the box and he got up to take the resulting penalty himself and scored to give Yarmouth a consolation goal on the night.
This was a difficult evening for the young Bloaters but they will hopefully learn from this defeat against older and more experienced opposition and come back stronger.
