North Walsham Town v Great Yarmouth Town Reserves.
Saturday 24th April 2021 Report by Martin Baxter.
Today our reserves face North Walsham Town away in the 3rd round of the Norfolk Junior Cup.
Because of a shortage of player availability around 5 of the reserve team regulars are called up for the 1st team’s squad for their senior cup game against Mundford, therefore it is a somewhat depleted Bloaters line up which makes the trip to north Norfolk for this cup tie.
However several players have stepped up from the development squad and this gives them an opportunity to impress at this higher level.
The game starts in breezy and sunny conditions and within the first 10 minutes the front three players of North Walsham look very lively and their number 10 Dale Wilson has the first chance of the match, however his effort goes wide of the target and 5 minutes later the same player has another chance which is saved by Yarmouth keeper Clements.
However it is third time lucky for the very impressive Wilson on 25 minutes, as he heads in from a left wing cross and despite the referees assistant flagging for off-side the referee overrules him and allows the goal.
On the half hour mark Yarmouth’s Ryan McNab is sent to the sin bin for 10 minutes for dissent and this leaves the already under pressure away side looking even more vulnerable and on 35 minutes keeper Clements punches the ball out from a free kick straight to a North Walsham striker who then lobs the ball well over the bar.
Just before half-time the home sides number 11 is firstly shown a sin bin card and this is immediately followed by a red card and he is sent off for an early end to his afternoon.
Half time: North Walsham Town 1 Great Yarmouth Town Reserves 0.
The 2nd half starts and with the man advantage Yarmouth start to get into the match a lot more and both sides have a couple of half chances and Ethan Hodge in particular is now getting more space in midfield to create opportunities and on 52 minutes he almost pulls his side level with a great run and shot which is turned around the post by the North Walsham keeper.
The home side at this point are arguing with the referee over every decision and they are in danger of getting another red card with this kind of indiscipline.
On the hour mark however the job becomes even more difficult for this inexperienced young Bloaters side as the home sides number 9 heads home with a well taken header following a deep free kick into the box.
This 2nd goal seems to knock the confidence out of Yarmouth as they then concede a 3rd goal which effectively settles this cup-tie.
Credit to this young side for giving it everything, however they just fell short on the day.
